A container spreader is a special device used to lift empty or loaded shipping containers. They can be operated by cranes, forklift trucks or a combination of the two.

The spreader enables containers to be lifted by the side of all four top corner fittings attached to a spreader beam hang above. This method is not suitable for lifting empty or loaded containers over uneven terrain.

It is necessary to ensure a vertical lift is applied to each top corner casting when loading and discharging containers on board ships by means of a crane or derrick. This is achieved with a twist-lock type spreader that is controlled by the crane driver with a sophisticated system or by moving a locking lever on the side of the spreader frame, usually through a rope hanging from the lever.

These spreaders also have a visual indicator to show when the twist locks are locked and unlocked. This is important as it reduces the risk of damage to the ship or vessel.

This type of spreader is available in 20ft, 30ft & 40ft single container lifting capacities. It has semi-automatic operation and can be operated with hook operated cranes, quay cranes, Overhead cranes or ship mounted cranes.

A spreader is a vital part of any port or intermodal terminal. Thousands of containers are handled every day at these facilities and they must be properly transported and handled to increase throughput capacity. Various methods and devices are used to handle these containers at ports and terminals, but the spreader is one of the most important container handling tools.
