A spreader flipper is a mechanical device that flips open and closes. The mechanism is controlled by motors or servo-motors. A servo-motor is a small mechanical device that automatically compensates for the torque applied to the back drive of the spreader flipper. A conventional electric motor can only supply a short amount of force against the forces that can occur during back-drive or when the spreader is stationary.

Spreader flippers typically include a hinged mounting that is mounted to a rectangular frame. The hinged mounting carries a motor and gear box. Both are protected by a protective plate. In some cases, the motor and gear box can be positioned at an angle that prevents back drive torque from being applied to the flipper.

The motor and gear box of a spreader flipper are often exposed to high impact loads. This can result in damage to the motor or gear box. A flipper with a gear box can protect the motor and gear box, but it also places the motor and gear box at risk of damaging the spreader. The motor and gear box must be adapted to the spreader to ensure optimal performance.
